OREANDA-NEWS. August 17, 2016. Kyocera Corporation (President: Goro Yamaguchi) announced the release of the KYF32 feature phone, the 10th model*1 in the “Simple Mobile Phone” series developed by the company. The new handset is equipped with multiple features that enhance audibility for the user, including enabling clear calls by adopting Kyocera’s proprietary Smart Sonic Receiver®, compatibility with KDDI’s “au VoLTE” voice-calling service*2, as well as a “tone-adjustable” function that allows users to customize the sound range in calls.

Photos and text are displayed clearly, widely and beautifully on the 3.4-inch FWVGA display. In addition to resistance against water and dust, for the first time in the Simple Mobile Phone series the KYF32 features shock resistance, providing users with a sense of security even when the handset gets wet, dirty or is accidentally dropped*3. Other functions that have been well received in past Simple Mobile Phone models are also available, such as one-touch keys to dial calls or send texts. With a modern and elegant design adding a premium feel, the handset is equipped with flat buttons that are easy to see and operate, and features a rounded body that makes it easier to grip.

Launched last month as part of KDDI’s new lineup, the product is available in three colors: Gold Pink and Blue.

Main Features

1. Clearly transmits sounds that are difficult to hear
With the “au VoLTE” voice-calling service, the new handset offers sound close to that of real voice quality, which can be heard easily. In addition, it is equipped with Kyocera’s proprietary Smart Sonic Receiver technology, which uses both sound waves and vibrations to transmit sound. Because the whole display vibrates to transmit sound, users do not need to worry about correctly positioning the device against the ear, and can also hear better even in noisy environments such as train stations by pressing the whole screen against the ear to create a cover. Moreover, the phone is equipped with a “tone-adjustable” function in which users can customize the range based on preference. For example, users can emphasize the sound range that typically becomes more difficult to hear with older age. This function offers three options for sound quality during calls: “clear,” “soft” and “moderate” modes*4.

Modes in the “tone-adjustable” function

Clear Emphasizes the high-tone range through higher volume and clarity
Soft Cuts down the high-tone range and reduces high-pitched sounds
Moderate Maintains sounds in lower volume and cuts down high-volume sounds

2. Large screen and keys for better visibility
Compared with the previous model in the Simple Mobile Phone series (K012), the new handset is equipped with a larger and higher-definition LCD screen. In addition to the menu, which is displayed with large letters and an easy-to-understand layout, users can see the time or pictographic icons at a glance through large displays. In addition, the phone is equipped with large-sized flat buttons for easier operability.

3. Resistance to water, dust and shock combined with functions to offer ease of use
In addition to resistance against water and dust offered in the previous model (K012), the KYF32 mobile phone newly features Military Standard 810G shock resistance. Moreover, the handset is equipped with functions popular in past Simple Mobile Phone models, including one-touch keys to dial calls or send texts by registering family members and friends; light notifications whereby keys light up in the same colors as guides on the screen; a pedometer that can be programmed to text-message family members with updates on the user’s activity levels; voice notifications which read aloud texts, the menu or time just by selecting a key; as well as an emergency bell and slide power switch. A tabletop holder is also available as an accessory.

MIL-STD-810G Method 516.7 Shock-Procedure IV / IPX5, IPX8 / IP5X

*1 Past “Simple Mobile Phone” models: K012, K010, K008, K005, K004, K003, A5528K, A101K, W32K
*2 Calls between handsets both tuned to the “au VoLTE” voice calling service (in au’s 4G LTE areas) feature high sound quality.
*3 Water resistance: IPX5 refers to resistance to water projected at all angles through a 6.3mm nozzle at a flow rate of 12.5 liters/min for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. IPX8 refers to resistance to immersion in tap water at normal temperature (static water) for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters.
Dust resistance: IP5X refers to protection against dust particles less than 75µm entering into the handset after agitation in a dust-proof test tube for 8 hours.
Shock resistance: Complying with the United States Department of Defense MIL-STD-810G Method 516.7 Shock-Procedure IV, the phone was tested by dropping a unit on plywood (lauan) at 26 angles from 1.22 meters. Cannot be guaranteed against all types of shocks.
*4 When the “tone-adjustable” function is used, a standard sound setting which takes into consideration the overall sound balance is applied.
*5 Continuous call time and continuous standby time are average usage times in Japan at static conditions. Actual usage times are shorter based on the region or environment in which the phone is used.
*6 The maximum communication speed differs depending on the communication standard or area. For information on the latest area, please check au’s website. * The indicated communication service is a best-effort service, and the indicated speed is the maximum speed under the communication standard and not the actual usage speed. Even in corresponding areas, the communication speed may significantly be reduced depending on the usage environment or line conditions.
