Russian Cosmonauts Monitor Haiti
OREANDA-NEWS. January 25, 2010. ISS-22 flight engineer Maxim Suraev will hold the second imaging session of the Haiti’s earthquake region during Uragan experiment. After the session, the images will be immediately downloaded, for the ecological monitoring in the catastrophe’s zone. The first session was carried out earlier this week by Oleg Kotov.
The Uragan experiment is to improve effectiveness in earthquake, flood, forest fire, hurricane, etc. prediction. The experiment helps setting requirements to emergency monitoring system, as well as picking the equipment for such system, and validate data processing and downloading methods. The images are intended for all interested organizations, including the Ministry of Emergencies and RAS.
The quake in Haiti killed over 110,000 people, left nearly 610,000 homeless and injured scores more.
