Turkmenistan and UNFPA Develop Dialogue on Gender Equality

The two-day seminar on the methodology for preparing the National Report on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The forum was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan an the UN Population Fund (UNFPA.
The members of the working group of the Interagency Commission for Monitoring Implementation of the International Human Rights Commitments of Turkmenistan, which is responsible for preparing the relevant national reports, took part in the forum. The high-ranking officials of the Migration Service of Turkmenistan, the Ashgabat Khyakimlik, members of the bars and journalists were invited to join the conversation. Nawamani Patna Patten, CEDAW expert was invited to the seminar as an international expert.
The discussion focused on the preparation of the National Report on the implementation of the CEDAW to the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. As is known, Turkmenistan joined the fundamental international human rights acts including the declaration and convention of women’s’ rights. Turkmenistan joined the CEDAW in 1996. In this regard the forum participants noted that the priority aspects of the policy of the Turkmen state included the principles of equal rights and freedoms, guarantees of equal opportunities to men and women in compliance with the Constitution of Turkmenistan and universally recognized norms of international law.
The participants noted that condemning discrimination against women in all its forms the Turkmen state invariably stood for nonadmission of any differentiation, exclusion, limitation or partiality based on gender. Turkmenistan’s concept on the guarantees of genuine equality of women, enhancement of their role in the social and political life was built on the firm legal foundation. In this work primary significance was attached to intensifying mutually advantageous contacts with foreign partners. The report on the implementation of the CEDAW in Turkmenistan had been presented and highly evaluated by the international experts during the international conference in Ashgabat recently.
