Turkmenistan and UN Enhancing Constructive Dialogue
OREANDA-NEWS. March 6, 2009. The regular consultations in the framework of Turkmenistan-UN legal cooperation were held in Ashgabat. Irina Liczek, UNDP Chief Technical Advisor in Turkmenistan was invited as an international expert to the meeting which brought together the members of the Inter-Ministerial Commission for Monitoring International Human Rights Commitments of Turkmenistan.
The meeting focused on the preparations of the State Reports on the fulfillment of international obligations in human rights under the UN core documents and submission of these reports to the United Nations treaty bodies. In particular, it concerned the main provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ratified by Turkmenistan in 1996.
As is known in August 2007 the Inter-Ministerial Commission for Monitoring International Human Rights Commitments was established in accordance with the Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan. The key fields of the Commission’s activity include mutually advantageous cooperation with foreign partners, in particular the experts of the UN agencies. This fruitful dialogue resulted in preparing a number of the important documents including the Universal Periodic Review on the human rights situation in Turkmenistan, the National Report on the implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, etc.
The forum participants called for further expanding legal partnership maintained by Turkmenistan and the United Nations for the benefit of the people. Being a full member of the United Nations Organisation and a party to over 90 UN core conventions and other international documents Turkmenistan demonstrated its adherence to the undertaken commitments and intended to consistently pursue this constructive policy.
