WHO Says How Many People on Earth are Immune to Coronavirus
OREANDA-NEWS. Less than ten percent of the world's population has antibodies to coronavirus. Sumiya Swaminathan, Chief Researcher at WHO, stated this.
She said that the organization is monitoring studies that analyze foci of infection in some cities.
The expert explained that "in places, for example, in densely populated urban areas, there are foci in which 50-60% of the population has been exposed to the virus and have antibodies. However, this does not mean that an entire city, province, state or country has achieved herd immunity." The interview of the WHO representative was broadcast on Twitter by the organization.
When people who do not have antibodies in such a locality travel outside of it, they are still at risk of infection. The only way to develop herd immunity on a global scale is through vaccination, Swaminathan said.
Earlier, the head of WHO gave his forecast regarding the estimated end of the pandemic. The head of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge, suggests that the coronavirus pandemic could end in early 2022. At the same time, the virus will not completely disappear, but there will be no need for restrictions, the WHO representative suggested.
