WHO does not Recommend Combining Different Vaccines Against COVID-19
OREANDA-NEWS. The World Health Organization (WHO) not recommend to get vaccinated with anti - coronavirus vaccines from two different manufacturers — to speed up the vaccination process. This was stated on Friday, April 9, in Geneva, the official representative of the WHO, Margaret Harris. According to her, the available data is not enough to say whether a combination of different drugs is possible.
Harris recalled, that the strategic advisory group of experts (SAGE) on immunization recommended using the same product for both doses, presenting recommendations for the use of the vaccine to the Swedish-British company «AstraZeneca» in February. Then the experts insisted on conducting specific studies on interchangeability.
Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin said on April 9, that it considers the combination of the two drugs safe. The General Directorate of Health in France, in turn, noted that all vaccinated «AstraZeneca» under the age of 55 years should receive a second dose of another vaccine.
Earlier, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) added information about the possibility of developing thrombosis to the description of the «Vaxzevria» coronavirus vaccine from the British-Swedish company «AstraZeneca». This follows from the updated characteristics of the drug. «A combination of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia, sometimes accompanied by bleeding, was observed in very rare cases after vaccination with Vaxzevria», the description said.
