The UN Warned of an Irreversible Catastrophe on Earth
OREANDA-NEWS. Global warming is happening so rapidly that the Earth will overcome the critical temperature threshold as early as 2030. This is stated in the report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
According to scientists, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere in 2019 was higher than at any time in the past two million years, and the temperature on the planet has risen rapidly for half a century. In their opinion, this is due to the emission of greenhouse gases by humans.
"The evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels are choking our planet and putting billions of people at risk," said UN Secretary General Antonio Guteris.
Global warming will affect the whole world and make it unstable, experts say. Climate change will result in more rainfall and associated flooding on Earth, severe drought in many regions and rising sea levels in coastal areas.
A series of extreme weather events have already occurred in the past few weeks around the world: floods have damaged Europe, China and India, and wildfires have erupted in the United States, Canada, Greece and Turkey, scientists say.
The United Nations Group of Experts believes that there is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a large scale in order to stabilize the temperature on the planet for 20-30 years. Otherwise, humanity will not be able to contain global warming at the level of 1.5-2 degrees Celsius in the next two decades. This, in turn, will cause critical damage to agriculture and health.
