The Luna-26 orbiter will be able to work for up to three years
Luna 27 will live for about a year. The Luna-25 and Luna-27 devices provide thermal elements that work on the decay of nuclear matter, which lasts for about a year. After sunset, the device will simply freeze if it is not heated," Zeleny said.
Luna 26 is an orbital expedition, and it has a longer life span. She will live maybe two or three years, but hardly a decade. The moon has a very heterogeneous gravitational field, there are "pits" there - this means that the device will not rotate in a circular or elliptical orbit, it will move like on a pothole road. To compensate for this, the orbit will need to be adjusted all the time, and the fuel supply is naturally limited," the academician noted.
The first lunar mission in the modern history of Russia was launched on August 11, 2023. The launch of the Luna-25 automatic interplanetary station was carried out from the Vostochny cosmodrome. The soft landing of the Luna-25 station at the South Pole of the Earth's natural satellite was supposed to take place on August 21, 2023, but on August 19 the device was lost after colliding with the lunar surface.
According to the preliminary results of the work of the interdepartmental commission to clarify the causes of the Luna-25 accident, the probable cause of the station's collapse was the abnormal functioning of the on-board control complex associated with the failure to turn on the accelerometer unit, which did not allow the spacecraft engines to be turned off in time.
As the head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, reported, instead of the planned 84 seconds, the station's engine worked for 127 seconds, which was the main cause of the device's accident.
Borisov previously stated that the launch of the Luna-26 mission is scheduled for 2027, Luna-27 for 2028, and the launch of Luna-28 is planned by 2030 or later.
