Test of Parachute for Mission to Mars Failed

OREANDA-NEWS The test parachute system for the Russian-European mission ExoMars-2020 failed. This was stated by the European Space Agency (ESA).
According to the agency, at first the parachute was opened correctly, but "damage to the dome, as in the previous time, was observed even before it was fully opened." As the experts explained, "as a result, the test module descended only by an exhaust parachute."
ESA regretfully acknowledged that the design changes to address the problems identified during the last test did not produce the desired result. Agency representatives emphasized that they are working on "identifying and correcting problems", after which the tests will be continued.
"The analysis should identify the cause of the anomaly and can help to work on further changes that may be required for the parachute system before subsequent tests," the ESA spokesman said. The next testing of the first main parachute is planned to be carried out before the end of this year, and the second main parachute - at the beginning of 2020.
As the agency reminded, previous tests took place on May 28: the test module was dropped from the helium stratospheric ball - from a height of 29 kilometers. Then “both main parachute canopies were damaged,” the ESA said.
