OREANDA-NEWS Paleontologists of Saratov State University (SSU) named after N.G. Chernyshevsky, together with specialists from the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, discovered the teeth of ancient sharks, the ancestors of megalodon. This is reported by RIA Novosti.

Experts conducted a study of fossilized remains found in the sand pits of the Morozovsky district of the Rostov region. The collection of samples continued for 22 years. In total, scientists have collected a collection of about 740 fossils, said Evgeny Popov, associate professor of the Department of Historical Geology and Paleontology.

It is noted that paleontologists were particularly interested in large serrated teeth belonging to the ancestors of the giant prehistoric marine predator megalodon, whose length exceeded 15 meters. In addition, experts have established that 56-33 million years ago, at least 30 species of cartilaginous fish inhabited this territory.

Earlier, a 13-year-old resident of the UK discovered a megalodon tooth 15 centimeters long on the beach in Walton-on-Neuse, Essex County.
