OREANDA-NEWS Researchers from China and South Africa have used an inexpensive microsatellite and portable ground stations to create the world's longest quantum communication line, the South China Morning Post newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, the researchers used the Chinese quantum microsatellite Jinan-1 to establish communication between the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and the base in Beijing, run by scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China.

“Using a common encryption key, the team transmitted two images via satellite — the Great Wall of China and the campus of the University of Stellenbosch — at a distance of 12.9 thousand kilometers,” the article says.

“This achievement serves as a solid foundation for our future plans to launch multiple microsatellites and create an extensive network of optical ground stations, which will bring us closer to the implementation of a practical quantum satellite constellation,” the article quotes the researchers as saying.
