Scientists have Created the Most Accurate Map of the Movement of Ice in Antarctica
Source: OREANDA-NEWS
OREANDA-NEWS Orange on the map indicates the regions where ice moves extremely slowly towards the ocean - less than a meter per year. The pink color indicates the territories on which ice moves at a speed of up to 3 km per year.
Previously, all studies of ice velocity used optical images and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Such devices allow to monitor fast-moving ice, but are not suitable for analyzing the speed of objects that almost do not move.
Now the engineers analyzed the interferometric phase of the data obtained with SAR. This made it possible to study even regions where the speed of ice movement is about 20 sm per year.
The data can be used not only to analyze the impact of global warming on Antarctica, but also to find promising areas for ice core drilling to obtain data on the structure of ice layers in the region.
