Scientists Found Out that Severe Droughts are Expected in Europe
OREANDA-NEWS. Scientists from the Ludwig and Maximilian University of Munich, as well as specialists from Ouranos, found out that severe droughts are expected in Europe from 2080 to 2099. This is stated in an article published in the journal Frontiers in Water.
The researchers divided Europe into eight regions with different climates: the British Isles, Scandinavia, Central Europe, the Alps, Eastern Europe, France, the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula. Using the climate model they created, scientists calculated the ratios of the predicted precipitation level from 2080 to 2099. Similar indicators from 2001 to 2020 were taken into account as the norm.
As a result, it turned out that a large number of droughts are expected in Europe. Changes in their frequency will depend on the region. Summer droughts will become more severe, and winter droughts will become less frequent. According to scientists, the strongest tendency to increase in droughts (by more than 50%) is predicted in the Alps, France, the Mediterranean and the Iberian Peninsula.
Earlier it was reported that according to the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the number of natural disasters in the world has increased fivefold over the past 50 years. All this is happening because of climate change. The WMO predicted a further increase in the frequency and scale of deadly disasters, but at the same time a decrease in the number of victims due to accurate forecasts.
