Russia Will Introduce Biometric Facial Recognition System
OREANDA-NEWS The standard for improving the comfort of Russian cities "smart city" is planned to include a biometric facial recognition system, said in an interview Deputy Minister of construction and housing of Russia Andrei Chibis.
The system has worked Sberbank together with VisionLab. It has already been tested at four stations of the Moscow metro, but then the task was not to pass the regime, and the search for criminals. Within a month, the system helped to identify 42 recidivists who managed to be detained.
Now there is a discussion about the introduction of such technology in Moscow. "It is obvious that due to the need to use the cards, the time of passengers' boarding is delayed. And the facial recognition algorithm works like this: the passenger enters the subway or bus, the program recognizes it and writes off the money from the Bank account for the journey," Chibis said.
The Ministry plans to involve Chinese companies in cooperation with Rostelecom.
At the conference within the framework of the WEF, Chibis stated that the standard will be the core of the "Smart city" project, which involves the introduction of digital technologies in the field of urban space organization, management of engineering infrastructure and utilities.
The politician noted that a sufficient number of cameras have already been installed in many cities to implement the project. "It's not only a matter of safety, but also comfort. We will study this technology and in the near future will determine the possibility of implementation — of course, primarily in terms of its cost," he said.
At the time of the World Cup, about 500 surveillance cameras, metro, stadiums, fan zones, as well as mobile biometric complexes serving mass events were connected to the facial recognition system in several regions. The system helped to detain more than 180 offenders, some of whom were on Federal wanted list, as well as weed out fans who are prohibited from attending sports events.
Since August 2018, the cameras of the recognition system have also been installed in several zones of the Moscow Oceanarium at VDNH: at the entrance, ticket offices and directly in the main hall in the zone of aquariums. The system records data about visitors and allows you to determine their number, repeat visits, approximate age, gender and other parameters, as well as create a depersonalized guest profile.
Facial recognition system will also introduce at the checkpoints of the military police.
