New Method of Russian Scientists Will Help to Cure Defects in the Cornea of the Eye
OREANDA-NEWS. According to the press service of the Tomsk Polytechnic University, scientists from the Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and the Siberian State Medical University (Siberian State Medical University) have created a new method of treating a serious disease of the cornea of the eye. According to them, the method they developed for the restoration of the cornea in bullous keratopathy is much safer and more effective than analogues, as it uses biodegradable material and stem cells.
Bullous keratopathy is a dangerous eye disease that leads to loss of vision. It is caused by defects in the inner layer of the cornea, as a result of which the intraocular fluid penetrates into the cornea, forming bubbles, bullae, and causing its edema.
The surgical method of treating this disease - barrier keratoplasty - helps to restore the previous shape and function of the cornea. During the operation, the damaged area is reinforced with a special polymer film implant, which restores the normal exchange of fluids inside the eye.
Scientists at TPU and Siberian State Medical University are developing new biodegradable implants "loaded" with blood stem cells, which will be used in keratoplasty to restore the cornea of the eye.
According to the developers, their use not only makes the surgical procedure much less traumatic, but also does not require repeated intervention to remove them from the eye. As the experimental stage showed, the restoration of the normal function of the cornea occurs within a month, and the implant dissolves without residue in about six months.
