OREANDA-NEWS Sechenov University specialists are developing a new method of data analysis to prevent exacerbation in patients with schizophrenia, based on the algorithm, it will be possible to create a phone application that will warn the user about an approaching exacerbation, the university's press service told RIA Novosti.
"At the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology of the First Moscow State Medical University in the Korsakov Psychiatric Clinic, a new method of data analysis is being created that allows to prevent exacerbations in patients with schizophrenia. The algorithm being developed can be used in a smartphone application. The application will warn the user about the approaching exacerbation and will allow the doctor to invite the patient to an unscheduled visit to correct therapy," the message says.
Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that involves long-term therapy. The disease can develop at any age, but most often the manifestation occurs before the age of 30. The most effective strategy for this disorder is to achieve and maintain a long–term remission, that is, a stable condition in which the patient can lead a habitual lifestyle, the press service explained.
"In order to maintain a stable condition against the background of minimal sufficient therapy, it is important to recognize the initial signs of deterioration in time. These signs are weakly expressed, almost imperceptible to the patient and his relatives. Therefore, a person may miss time and not see a doctor in time. Meanwhile, it is much more effective and faster to stop the condition at the very beginning of an exacerbation than with a recurrent attack that has already developed," said Marina Kinkulkina, a psychiatrist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology at Sechenov University, whose words are quoted in the message.
