Facebook Told about the Progress of Research in the Field of Mind Reading
Source: OREANDA-NEWS
OREANDA-NEWS Facebook shared the achievements of a project to create a device that is worn on the head, which could “read the thoughts” of people. It is expected that through such a device users can control music or perform actions in virtual reality just thinking about it.
As it was described in Facebook, the company actively funds scientific experiments in this area, conducted on volunteers. So far, neuroscientists at the University of California at San Francisco have made the most progress in the development of "speech decoders", MIT Technology Review writes.
There, scientists use ECOG devices — arrays of electrodes that read the activity of the cerebral cortex and are attached directly to it. Patients who underwent brain surgery due to complications caused by epilepsy took part in the tests.
During the tests, volunteers read questions from a sheet (for example, "on a scale from 0 to 10, how much pain do you feel?") And asked to think about a simple answer. For more complex questions (for example, a favorite musical instrument), researchers were able to get clear answers like "piano" and "violin".
