OREANDA-NEWS. Coronavirus infection in children can lead to a dangerous sepsis-like complication - multisystem inflammation, according to doctors at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospital in Britain. Express writes about this.
As the experts explained, such a consequence of COVID-19 is quite rare - only half of the percentage of children and adolescents who have undergone the infection, and for many, it goes away without symptoms. However, if multisystem inflammation does occur, patients experience high fever, persistent coughing, and a change or loss of taste and smell.
According to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Hospital, children and adolescents with this inflammation develop fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain and cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, swelling of the arms and legs, peeling skin, rashes, head and muscle aches, and irritability. Edema spreads throughout the body, a typical immune response.
Doctors also talked about organ-specific lesions that appear six months later in patients with multisystem inflammation. In addition, they have difficulty exercising for several months.
Vaccination remains the most reliable way to protect against COVID-19. According to the authorities, the number of cases among those vaccinated does not exceed four percent. In Russia, more than 76.5 million people have now received one dose, 70.8 million were fully vaccinated.
