Deadly Сonsequence of Сoronavirus is Named
OREANDA-NEWS. In the first two weeks after suffering COVID-19, the risk of developing dangerous cardiovascular diseases significantly increases. The Lancet magazine writes about this with reference to the work of scientists from the Swedish University of Umeå.
The authors compared the incidence of acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke in people with COVID-19 and members of a control group, which included patients who underwent these conditions, but were not infected with coronavirus. Swedish researchers found that COVID-19 increased the risk of developing these diseases by about three times. This relationship persisted even after taking into account age, gender and socio-economic factors.
The project involved 86,742 patients, which, according to the authors, is the largest such study.
Earlier in The Lancet published the results of an observational study, which involved patients from more than 300 British hospitals. So, the most frequent complications after coronavirus were renal - they were observed in almost 25 percent of cases; respiratory (18 percent), and systemic (16 percent). Almost one in eight had cardiovascular complications (12 percent), neurological - four percent, gastrointestinal and hepatic - less than one percent.
More than 17 million people die from cardiovascular disease every year, according to the World Health Organization. Experts believe that about 80 percent of premature strokes and heart attacks are preventable.
