AstraZeneca Vaccine Discontinued at U.S. Factory
The administration of US President Joe Biden has banned the production of the AstraZeneca vaccine against the Covid-19 coronavirus at the Emergent plant in Baltimore after 15 million doses of the drug were spoiled.
The White House has appointed Johnson & Johnson to be responsible for the production of the Covid-19 vaccine at a plant in Baltimore, where production of the AstraZeneca vaccine was discontinued after 15 million doses of the drug were damaged, senior US federal health officials quoted The New York Times as saying.
The decision by the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) came days after officials learned that Emergent BioSolutions, a contract company that makes vaccines for Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca, had mistakenly mixed the ingredients of the two drugs.
HHS has commissioned Johnson & Johnson to create a new management team to oversee all aspects of manufacturing at Emergent's Baltimore plant, officials said. The company said in a statement that it "takes full responsibility" for the vaccine produced at its Emergent plant.
US President Joe Biden is known to be pushing hard to have enough doses produced in the country by the end of May to vaccinate every American adult. At the same time, federal officials are concerned that the incident will undermine public confidence in the Covid-19 vaccines.
