Hongxing Tang named the Llewellyn West Jones Jr. Professor of Engineering
OREANDA-NEWS. Hongxing Tang, newly named as the Llewellyn West Jones Jr. Professor of Engineering, focuses his research on nano-electromechanical systems, optomechanics, integrated quantum and nonlinear optics.
Tang directs the Yale Nanodevices Laboratory, which he established in the Department of Electrical Engineering in 2006. In addition to fundamental research into photonic integrated circuits, Tang and his team work on advanced device technologies including new laser sources, single photon detectors, chipscale quantum circuits, and optomechanical resonators and inertial sensors. His research has been supported by numerous grants from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Air Force Office of Sponsored Research, Army Research Office, the Packard Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, among other organizations.
A graduate of the University of Science and Technology of China, Tang earned an M.Phil. in physics from the University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. in physics from the California Institute of Technology. After serving as a senior research scientist at Caltech, he joined the Yale faculty in 2006 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering and of mechanical engineering. Prior to his new appointment, he was professor of electrical engineering.
Tang has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and scholarly monographs. He holds more than a dozen U.S. patents and co-founded Nanotechnica Corporation in Pasadena in 2004.
The Yale professor’s honors include the Arthur Greer Memorial Prize, the Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering, and the National Science Foundation Career Award. He is an elected member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering.
