OREANDA-NEWS Apple has introduced the new password-free authorization technology on sites and services, according to TechCrunch.
The technology is called Passkeys. It was announced at a presentation dedicated to the first day of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). According to journalists, the option allows you to literally cancel the usual passwords in favor of the biometric authorization standard.
Passkeys is based on the Web Authentication API (WebAuthn) standard, which uses public-key cryptography. Created and saved passwords are stored on the device itself, not on the server. Apple representatives stressed that such passwords cannot be stolen or compromised with the help of phishing.
When the user logs in, there is no need to enter a classic password consisting of a set of characters. Instead, you need to sign in with Face ID or Touch ID on your computer, smartphone, or tablet. Keys are stored in iCloud and can be synced across Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs. Consumers will also be able to sign in to websites and services with their account on their third-party devices by using their iPhone or iPad to scan a QR code.
"Since it only takes a single tap to sign in, it's easier, faster, and more secure than nearly all common modern forms of authentication", said Garrett Davidson, Apple engineer. The new Passkeys technology can be used on various platforms.
In early May, Apple, Google and Microsoft agreed to launch a single standard for authorization on the Internet. According to representatives of IT corporations, the passwordless login feature should appear in 2023.
