OREANDA-NEWS Chemists from Lobachevsky University of Nizhny Novgorod (UNN) have developed an antimicrobial biodegradable food film. It allows you to extend the shelf life of products by 2.5-3 times, TASS reports.

The material contains a modified organic zinc salt, a special antibacterial compound. It prevents germs from entering the food. The new film, unlike the usual one, does not harm the environment so much. "Due to starch and sucrose in the composition, such a film is destroyed in the soil for 50-70 years," the university said.

The development of Nizhny Novgorod scientists is the first antimicrobial packaging for the food industry. Before that, the technology was used only in construction and medicine.

A similar development was previously presented by Brazilian scientists from the State University of Campinas and the Institute of Food Technology. They have created a biodegradable food packaging based on limonene, a compound that is obtained from the peel of citrus fruits.
