A Deficiency in One of the Five Proteins Leads to the Most Widespread Kind of Blindness
The most widespread kind of blindness is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It affects about 600 thousand people in the UK. The researchers found that 40-50% of the protein scores fluctuate too much.
The discovery was made jointly by scientists from Manchester, London and Tübingen in Germany. The scientific article was published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. The most widespread reason of blindness was FHR protein deficiency.
“Using modern mass spectrometry techniques, we are able now to confidently take the gage of requisite proteins and show for the first time what is important, if not the most important factor in the development of AMD”, - said the Dr. Richard Unwin.
