British Actor Ian Holm Died
OREANDA-NEWS. British actor Ian Holm died at the age of 88.
The newspaper Variety, citing a representative of the actor, reported that Sir Holm, who had suffered from Parkinson’s disease in recent years, died on June 19 in a hospital.
Ian Holm began his acting career in the 1950s. He has played in more than a hundred films and series, including March or Die (1977), Chariots of Fire (1981), The Fifth Element (1997), The Day after Tomorrow (2004), The Aviator (2004). For his role in Chariots of Fire, Holm was nominated for the Oscar Award. The worldwide fame was brought to him by the roles of Ash in the movie Alien (1979) and the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins in the trilogy The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003).
Holm is also known as a theater actor. In 1998, he received the Lawrence Olivier Award for playing the role of King Lear.
In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II elevated Holm to the Commanders of the Order of the British Empire, and in 1998 he received the noble rank.
