OREANDA-NEWS  The State Museum of Abkhazia in Sukhumi temporarily closed the exhibition due to photos of terrorist Shamil Basayev. This is reported by RBC with reference to the Russian Embassy in the republic.

The museum management stated that they would fix the situation as soon as possible. No other comments were reported.

The reason for the closure was the appearance of Basayev's portrait in the museum marked "Hero of Abkhazia". Information about this was spread by Russian Telegram channels. The inscription on the museum building itself says that it was restored at the expense of Russia.

Earlier, State Duma deputy Mikhail Matveev criticized the portrait of a terrorist on display in the museum.

In 1992, Shamil Basayev took part in the fighting between Abkhazia and Georgia on the side of the former. Later, members of Basayev's "Abkhazian battalion" confronted federal troops in the conflict in Chechnya.
