OREANDA-NEWS. The Irish Data Protection Commission has fined the WhatsApp messenger for 225 million euros. This was reported by Bloomberg. This is the first fine under the toughened European Union data protection law.
The Commission ruled that WhatsApp failed to comply with the requirements for transparency in the processing of personal information. Also, the owners of the messenger will need to bring their data processing system in line with the requirements. This includes explaining how users can file complaints with the supervisory authority.
A representative of WhatsApp expressed disagreement with the decision, called the fine disproportionate and said that the company would appeal it. Earlier, the WhatsApp messenger refused to implement Apple's approach in the fight against the spread of child pornography and the detection of crimes against minors. The head of the messenger, Will Cathcart, called the idea of Apple the wrong approach and an obstacle to the privacy of people around the world.
