OREANDA-NEWS. German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said in an interview with the Funke media group that Germany bears a historical responsibility to all the countries of the USSR.
Earlier, the Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, called the FRG responsible to Ukraine for the Second World War.
“We have a special historical responsibility to all the countries of the former Soviet Union, because Germany brought incredible suffering to people there,” Burbock said.
The minister stressed that it is precisely for this reason that Germany bears a historical responsibility to prevent a new military conflict in Europe.
Melnyk lamented earlier that Ukraine is not perceived by Germany as a "great cultural European nation" and "an influential political subject." He declared "German arrogance and megalomania".
Melnyk sees this as the reason why Kiev's interests are often ignored by Berlin. At the same time, he believes that, nevertheless, Ukrainian diplomats in Germany "were able to powerfully declare" themselves, as a result of which the German elite, the "journalistic beau monde" "know that there is a Ukraine that has its own goals and confidently paves its way."
The Ukrainian diplomat called the main challenge in the bilateral relations of the states that Berlin can "easily afford" not to take into account the interests of Kiev. In this, the ambassador blamed the shortcomings of diplomats over the past 30 years. He believes that Kiev itself did not declare itself as a great cultural European nation.
