French Media Spoke about Macron's Diplomatic Response to Zelensky's Question
OREANDA-NEWS. Before meeting with Emmanuel Macron in Paris, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again announced the need to join the European Union and NATO. The French leader had to get away from the hot topic so as not to offend his colleague. The French newspaper L'Opinion writes about it.
The publication notes that in negotiations with Zelensky, Macron sought to reduce tensions between Moscow and Kiev with the help of "diplomacy", but at the same time tried not to lose face. Nevertheless, he had to touch on a topic that Zelensky mentioned in an interview with Le Figaro, namely, the question of Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.
According to the author of the article, the French president found a way to politely answer, simply without talking on this topic initially: Macron understands that support for Ukraine's entry into NATO threatens to complicate relations with Russia. Later, the administration of the French leader clarified that this "delicate issue" should be considered collectively within the framework of the NATO summit in June.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy called joining NATO the only way to end the conflict in Donbass. At the same time, as noted by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, Kiev will thereby aggravate its internal problems, and for the residents of the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass, such membership will turn into a "deeply unacceptable prospect."
