Foreign Sites Will Be Punished for Censorship Against Russian Media
OREANDA-NEWS. On November 19, a bill on retaliatory sanctions against foreign Internet platforms for censorship against Russian media is submitted to the State Duma. The authors of the bill were parliamentarians from different factions.
As the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Alexander Khinshtein explained, this draft law deals with sanctions for violations of constitutional rights. According to the bill, measures will be taken against foreign Internet platforms to restrict access to information on racial, national and political affiliation, and this will apply not only to social networks, but also to large IT platforms.
There are several principles in the law. The first one is restricting access to content. When, for example, Russian television accounts on social networks are blocked or a film made by Russian television people is removed from the show. The second principle is when they restrict access to information on racial, national, political affiliation.
Countermeasures planned for censorship of foreign media include blocking, slowing traffic and fines for non-compliance.
It is reported that the decision on measures will be made in agreement with the Foreign Ministry in order to understand all the accompanying foreign policy circumstances.
Earlier, Roskomnadzor has already sent requests to Facebook, Twitter and Google to end censorship. According to the agency, these platforms now restrict access to materials from about 20 Russian media outlets, including RIA Novosti, RT, Sputnik and Rossiya 1. In total, according to open sources, in recent years, the administration of the YouTube service has blacklisted about 200 Russian-language channels.
