WHO Confirmed Russia's Victory Over Rubella
OREANDA-NEWS The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially confirmed the status of the Russian Federation as the country that won rubella.
This was reported to journalists on Wednesday in the press service of the Ministry of Health of Russia.
"The World Health Organization has documented that Russia has received the status of the country that stopped the transfer of rubella for almost three years," the press service said.
The report notes that the Director of the World Health Organization regional office for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab gave the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Veronika Skvortsova certificate on achieving the elimination of rubella in 2015-2017, signed by the Chairman of the European regional Commission for the verification of elimination of measles and rubella Gunter Pfaf.
Thus,"the Russian Federation has made a significant contribution to the overall goal of eliminating both measles and rubella in 53 European countries," said the WHO regional Director.
Rubella is a contagious and usually mild viral infection that affects most children and young people.
Rubella is the leading cause of birth defects among the causes that can be prevented with vaccines. Rubella in pregnant women can lead to fetal death or congenital malformations such as congenital rubella syndrome. Rubella virus is transmitted by airborne droplets when an infected person sneezes or coughs. Man is the only known carrier of the rubella virus.
There is no special treatment for rubella, but the disease can be prevented by vaccination. This was the main way to achieve the result.
