OREANDA-NEWS. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the closure of the state borders because of the coronaxirus pandemic led to a shortage of vaccines against other diseases.

He informed that 14 vaccination campaigns against poliomyelitis, measles, cholera, human papillomavirus, yellow fever and meningitis have already been suspended. 13 million people need these vaccines. According to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, 21 low- and middle-income countries have already reported vaccine shortages due to border closures and transportation problems, the WHO head added.

Adhanom Ghebreyesus also expressed concern about the situation with malaria in the regions south of the Sahara. WHO predicts that if vaccination ceases, the number of cases of malaria can double there.
