OREANDA-NEWS. US intelligence has called Russia the country's main future rival in the field of weapons of mass destruction. This is reported by TASS with reference to the report of the Office of the Director of the American National Intelligence about the threats to the country.
The document was developed on the basis of data available as of January 21, 2022. It was made public on the eve of hearings scheduled for March 8 in the special committee on intelligence of the US House of Representatives.
“According to our estimates, Russia will remain the United States’ largest and most capable rival in terms of weapons of mass destruction for the foreseeable future as it expands and improves its nuclear arsenal and builds up strategic and non-strategic weapons capabilities,” the report says.
The document also states that the Russian Federation believes it should have nuclear weapons in case there is a potential conflict with the United States and NATO.
Earlier it was reported that the United States could at one time transfer plutonium to Ukraine for the development of nuclear weapons.
According to a representative of one of the competent departments of the Russian Federation, in order to accelerate research and development work, Ukraine received plutonium of the required quality from abroad.
“According to available information, the United States has already transferred this material to its partners. There is reason to believe that in the “Ukrainian case” it was not without the participation of Washington,” the source said.
