OREANDA-NEWS A military alliance between Russia and Nicaragua would be a nightmare for the United States of America. The Americans assume that such cooperation will result in the construction of an alternative Panama Canal, says Ivan Konovalov, Development Director of the Fund for the Promotion of Technologies of the XXI Century. He told "Lenta.ru" about this.

"Of course, we have long-standing ties. The Soviet Union also helped the Nicaraguan people in a fair fight against the Contras," Konovalov said. Such a situation is being actively discussed by American experts, and this is a frightening prospect for their country, he added.

"Of course, they scare themselves more with this, but it is quite feasible. Imagine that Chinese contractors will invest money in this. Imagine such a union. The Russian military guards the alternative to the Panama Canal in Nicaragua, and China invests money in it. This is just a nightmare for the United States," Konovalov said.

Earlier, the Russian ambassador to Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, Alexander Khokholikov, said that the law of Nicaragua provides for the presence on the territory of the country of military personnel and military equipment of a number of countries, including Russia. According to the diplomat, Russian military specialists work legally on the territory of the state, this is necessary for the exchange of experience, exercises and joint fight against crime.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also stressed that the number of Russia's friends among Latin American countries is growing.
