OREANDA-NEWS. A spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that on July 27, Russian police used excessive force against the protesters in Moscow, reports the American media. “The force applied when working with a crowd in Russia or in any other country in the world should always be proportionate to the threat, if it exists. Force must be used only as a last resort”, the spokesman said. He also called on the Russian authorities to allow citizens to hold and take part in peaceful assemblies without any restrictions.

More than 1,000 people were detained on Saturday, July 27, during a rally for the admission of opposition candidates to the elections to the Moscow City Duma. The city authorities didn't agree on this action. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 1,074 people were detained, the news organization reported 1,373 detainees.

Some of the detainees, including unregistered candidates, were then arrested. Thus, the court arrested the municipal deputy Ilya Yashin for ten days, Konstantin Yankauskas for seven days, the director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation Ivan Zhdanov for 15 days. In addition, one of the participants of the rally, Yevgeny Kovalenko, opened a criminal case on violence against a representative of the authorities. According to the Russian media, on Tuesday opened two more new cases.

The libertarian party applied for another rally on August 3. The city authorities agreed on the event on Sakharov Avenue, but the party did not like it: they insist that the event should be held on Sakharov Avenue. Prosecutor General Yury Chaika on Tuesday addressed his subordinates, urging them to prevent the repetition of "the events that recently occurred in Moscow". His deputy, Alexander Buksman, said that the actions of organizers and protesters must be “strictly suppressed”.
