OREANDA-NEWS  In the first half of 2024, the Bank of Russia identified 3,495 organizations with signs of illegal activity in the country. This is stated in the publication of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.

About half of the illegal companies had signs of financial pyramids, and another 30 percent were illegal creditors. At the same time, most fraudulent projects used social networks and the Telegram messenger to advertise and promote their offers, the regulator noted. In six months, at the initiative of the Bank of Russia, more than 8 thousand Internet resources belonging to illegal companies with a potential audience of about 23 million people were blocked.

The Central Bank said that often the tricks of intruders are based on the sanctions theme. For example, Russians may be offered the opportunity to trade foreign assets or invest in Western companies. At the same time, scammers offer to pay for services and transfer funds for investments through foreign payment services or cryptocurrency.

The majority (59 percent) of the pyramids identified in January-June attracted customer funds in cryptocurrencies. The regulator explained that such financial instruments allow criminals to remain anonymous, and their clients face the inability to prove fraud.

In Russia, since July 25, the mechanism for returning money to citizens that was stolen from them by fraudsters has changed. If the bank transferred funds to the account of intruders (which is located in the relevant database of the regulator) without first notifying the client about it, he will be obliged to return all the money in full, said Dmitry Ibragimov, head of the Security Department of the Central Federal District of the Bank of Russia.
