OREANDA-NEWS The Supreme Court of Australia has rejected Moscow's appeal against the Commonwealth of Nations taking control of the site leased for the new Russian embassy, ABC News reports.
In August 2022, the administration of the capital territory in Canberra notified Russia of the termination of the lease of a plot for a diplomatic mission, but on May 31, the Federal Court of Australia declared this step invalid. Then the parliament passed a special law that cancels the lease. On Friday, June 23, the embassy filed an appeal against this to the Supreme Court of the country.
"This morning, Supreme Court Judge Jane Jagot rejected Russia's appeal for an injunction that would not allow the Commonwealth of Nations to enter the disputed land while any court proceedings are underway. Judge Zhago told the court that the law of parliament should prevail as long as it remains in force," the TV channel reported.
