The Russian Orthodox Church Considers the Law of Montenegro on Religious Freedom to Be Cynical
OREANDA-NEWS. According to a statement published on the website of the Moscow Patriarchate, the law on religious freedom adopted in Montenegro, which provides for the seizure of property of the Serbian Orthodox Church, looks like a cynical blow and supports a schism.
According to the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the situation in Montenegro is similar to Ukrainian. “Both countries adopted discriminatory laws that laid the legal basis for the seizure of temples, monasteries and lands from the Church. In Montenegro, schismatics with the support of the government have been trying to seize the temples of the canonical Church for many years – just like in Ukraine,” the statement says. It was added that in both cases there is single plan “born far beyond the borders” of both countries.
On December 28, President of Montenegro signed a law on religious freedom, according to which all religious objects in the country built before December 1, 1918 will be returned to state ownership. Discussion of the document led to protests in parliament and riots on the streets.
