OREANDA-NEWS Border checkpoints on the Russian-Estonian border continue to operate, information about the closure of the border from Russia is not reliable, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
"Taking into account the dissemination of completely false information by Estonia, we consider it necessary to inform the public that border checkpoints on the Russian side continue to operate, there are no plans to close the border with Russia; our country is ready to receive as many guests as they want to come in accordance with the procedure established by law," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in response to the media question about the "collapse" at the border crossing in the Pskov region.
According to the report, due to the New Year holidays, there is an increase in traffic at three checkpoints in the Pskov region: Kunichina Gora, Shumilkino and Krupp. If 10-15 people passed through the checkpoint on normal days, then in the current period up to 150 people pass through during the day.
"The situation has been aggravated by the fact that the alternative checkpoint Narva-1 on the border of Russia and Estonia, on May 1, switched from a round-the-clock operation mode to a shortened schedule (from 7.00 to 23.00) on the initiative of the Estonian side," Zakharova said. In this regard, she explained, the Estonian authorities recommend that citizens go to other checkpoints - Koidula/Kunichina Gora and Luhamaa/Shumilkino, which are open around the clock.
"As a result of the redirection of citizens on the eve of the holiday period and, above all, due to the artificial escalation of the situation by the Estonian border guards, queues began to form for hours at these checkpoints," Zakharova summed up.
In addition, according to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, "absolutely false information is being actively disseminated through social networks and the media, fake messages are being broadcast that Russia is closing the border."
"The information that Russian border guards are subjecting Russians with EU passports to enhanced security and document verification is also completely untrue," Zakharova added.
