The Passenger Traffic Tracking System in Moscow will not Collect Personal Data
OREANDA-NEWS. As the press service of the Center for Traffic Management of Moscow assured, the pedestrian tracking system which is being created in Moscow will not collect personalized data about citizens.
The service employees explained that the most essential task of such a system is "to maximize the quality of pedestrian movement and the work of all kinds of urban transport." The experts added that when creating a system for controlling the movement of citizens, they were guided by the positive and fruitful experience of such large cities as Singapore, Berlin and London.
Passenger traffic will be monitored by tracking the MAC addresses of smartphones. The work of the system is based on the fact that each gadget constantly broadcasts its unique MAC address to connect to Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth devices nearby. So 220 devices for data collection are planned to be installed at public transport stops, as well as in pedestrian navigation points.
An order for the creation of such a system was previously placed on the public procurement website. As a result, the project will be implemented by the winner of the tender "Information Technologies of the Future", which offered a price of 152.9 million rubles.
