OREANDA-NEWS After March 8, Russians have been throwing away almost nine tons of flowers. The amount of waste from bouquets that ended up in the trash after the holidays was revealed by Denis Butsaev, CEO of the Russian Environmental Operator (REO), in an interview with the Moscow Says radio station.
Economists estimate that shops sell about 160 million flowers annually on International Women's Day. "If each one weighs 70 grams, then this is 11.2 thousand tons of total weight," the head of the REO estimated.
Butsaev admitted that 80 percent of these flowers will end up in the trash in a few days — then 8,960 tons of waste will end up in landfills. The specialist clarified that such garbage is considered organic, so it should be thrown into containers for mixed waste.
Earlier, Russians were warned that throwing all the garbage into one tank is dangerous for nature and human health. The easiest way to take care of the environment is to separate waste into recyclable and non—recyclable.
