OREANDA-NEWS The new strategic concept will be adopted at the NATO summit in Madrid. It will identify China as a "systemic challenge" while Russia as a "permanent threat". This is reported by Bloomberg.
The report says that the bloc's allies "won't go so far as to call China an adversary". However, the alliance is expected to raise China-related issues connected with cybersecurity and disinformation, as well as control of critical infrastructure and compliance with the rules of the international order.
The agency draws attention to the fact that the new concept will call Russia a "direct threat" to NATO states. According to Bloomberg sources, in this regard, the document will somehow take into account the fact that Russia and China are connected by relations of "cooperation that has no borders".
The China language was "a difficult obstacle to balancing the various interests of the allies", the report said. This is because "the US took a tough stance on Beijing" while several European allies, including Germany, which has close economic and trade ties with China, sought to take a moderate stance in the document.
Bloomberg adds that negotiations on the text are ongoing, and it could be changed before the leaders sign it.
The summit will be held June 28-30 in Madrid.
