OREANDA-NEWS Smartphones with lithium-ion batteries are not recommended to be left on charge all night and in no case, as many do, you can not put them under the pillow, as this significantly increases the risk of fires. In just 11 months of 2022, gadgets caused more than 500 fires, Rinat Yenikeev, director of the Department of Supervision and Preventive Work of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia.
"To prevent fires, charging smartphones and other gadgets must be carried out strictly in accordance with the instructions. Modern smartphone models have an overcharge protection function. But if the phone is charged to 100% and continues to be connected to the network, there is still a load on the batteries. And this is dangerous and can lead to a fire," he said.
According to him, you can not put gadgets under the pillow, especially if they are charging. In addition to the fact that it is harmful to humans, it is extremely dangerous, since cooling of such a phone in an airless environment does not occur at all. "For 11 months of 2022, 509 fires occurred in the country, the objects of which were smartphones, tablets, mobile phones, 440 of them started due to a malfunction of chargers," the director of the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.
Lithium-ion batteries are installed in all modern smartphones, tablets, power banks and other gadgets. "From the point of view of the duration of operation of the devices, they give a big plus, but from the point of view of fire safety there is also a minus. Why? Because with all the reliability of these elements, unfortunately, we have frequent facts of their ignition. At the same time, such a device will burn until you completely immerse it in water," said Enikeev. He added that when handling gadgets, you should not only strictly comply with the requirements specified in the manufacturer's instructions, but also apply certified chargers to them.
At the end of December last year, there were several cases of powerbank fires on board aircraft. So, on December 29, while taxiing along the runway at Domodedovo Airport on board the Moscow- Kaliningrad plane, one of the passengers caught fire with a portable charger. The fire was extinguished by the crew. The next day, a plane en route from Khabarovsk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky made an emergency landing at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport due to a power bank fire at one of the passengers. There were 112 people on the plane in total, two passengers became ill and needed medical help.
