OREANDA-NEWS. The manifestations of aggression in Georgia against Russian citizens cause serious concern to the Kremlin, since many Russian tourists visit this country, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters, the Russian media reported. “Everything that happened yesterday in Georgia is nothing more than Russophobic provocation. This raises the extreme concern of the fact that there were aggressive manifestations against Russian citizens”, said Peskov.
According to him, the issue of the immediate personal safety of Russians is also worried about the Kremlin due to the fact that the incident is connected with an international inter-parliamentary event. “This causes extreme condemnation”, he said. Peskov also recalled that Georgia is visited by many tourists from Russia. “Therefore, this is an extremely serious matter”, the Kremlin spokesman stressed. He also added that the situation in Georgia was already commented on in detail by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
On June 20, during a meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy in the Georgian parliament, local opposition forces protested against the behavior and speeches of the head of this organization, Russian State Duma deputy Sergei Gavrilov. The oppositionists from the “United National Movement” (founder Mikhail Saakashvili) and “European Georgia” (leader David Bakradze) didn't like the fact that Gavrilov occupied the chair of the Georgian parliament.
Russia is an occupier and its representative shouldn't lead the meeting, they said. At the same time, President Salome Zurabishvili, as well as representatives of the ruling party "Georgian Dream" - its chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili, Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, parliament speaker Irakli Kobakhidze - made anti-Russian statements. So, Ivanishvili called inadmissible the election of “representative of the invader state” as head of the forum held in the Georgian parliament, and Salome Zurabishvili called Russia “the enemy and occupier”.
