Representatives of the German customs service confiscated the oil tanker Eventin, which lost control in the Baltic Sea in the first half of January 2025. This is reported by the local newspaper Spiegel, citing its own information.

The problematic tanker, flying the flag of Panama, was confiscated last week, on Friday, March 14. Both the ship itself and about 100 thousand tons of oil worth about 40 million euros, which were on board, became German property, the article notes.

The Eventin was traveling from the Russian port of Ust-Luga across the Baltic Sea to Egypt. However, along the way, the ship encountered problems and became uncontrollable. The Eventin crew sent a distress signal in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany, near the island of Rügen. The German Emergency Management Command decided to tow the tanker to a safe location located north of Cape Arkona.

After that, Spiegel explains, various German ministries negotiated among themselves about the future of Eventin. The final decision was made against the background of the EU authorities adding the vessel to the list of the Russian shadow fleet. Germany is currently planning how and where to safely pump crude oil out of the tanker and what to do next with the vessel.
