OREANDA-NEWS In July, the European Union imported Russian liquefied natural gas for the maximum of 565.7 million euros since the end of winter, according to an analysis by RIA Novosti of Eurostat data.

Imports in July increased by about 13.5% in both monthly and annual terms. The main buyer was Spain, which increased purchases 2.3 times to 240.8 million euros. In addition, the Netherlands increased imports by a quarter, to 57.2 million euros.

France, which is the second largest importer of Russian LNG, on the contrary, reduced purchases by 11% in July, to 210.4 million euros. Belgium has halved imports to $47.7 million.

In total, the European Union purchased 4 billion euros worth of liquefied natural gas from Russia in seven months, compared to 5.5 billion a year earlier. However, despite the decrease in the cost of supplies, the share of Russian LNG jumped to 18.6% from 13.3%. This was due to a halving of imports to the EU from other sources.

Earlier, Dmitry Birichevsky, director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told RIA Novosti that EU countries continue to increase purchases of Russian gas. According to the diplomat, by now the share of Russian gas in the total EU imports reaches 15%.

Many European countries lost some or all of Gazprom's gas in 2022. In the spring, he reduced or stopped deliveries to Bulgaria, Poland, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, mainly citing non-compliance with the presidential decree on payment in rubles or other technical reasons. By autumn, supplies along the main route, the Nord Stream, had stopped. Pumping along the balancing Belarusian route Yamal — Europe has also stopped, and on the Ukrainian route it has significantly decreased.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the West has made a serious mistake by refusing to buy hydrocarbons from Russia, it will fall into a new, stronger dependence due to higher prices. Those who refused supplies are still buying more expensive through intermediaries and will buy Russian oil and gas, Moscow warned.
