OREANDA-NEWS In Ulan-Ude (Buryatia), 18 stray dogs were euthanized for the first time after the entry into force of the new law of the subject. This was announced by the Telegram channel Babr Mash.
The republican authorities allowed dogs to be euthanized in November 2023.
The procedure was performed at the Ananda Nursery. After that, the volunteers began to take the animals out of the region when it was impossible to find their owners. Dogs are taken out on trains and buses.
According to Buryat legislation, the killing of animals is allowed if the dog fails to find a new owner. It is also allowed to euthanize dogs if it is necessary to stop the suffering of the animal or if it has an injury incompatible with life and dangerous diseases. The authors of the law stated that it would promote humane treatment of animals.
In July 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing regions to independently choose measures for the treatment of stray animals and decide their fate. According to the authors of the law, delegating such powers to subjects will help to increase the effectiveness of measures aimed at protecting the population from aggressive stray dogs.
