Sri Lanka positively assesses negotiations with Russia on the construction of a nuclear power plant

OREANDA-NEWS Sri Lanka's negotiations on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country with the participation of Russia are going positively, Sri Lanka's Minister of Industry and Plantations Ramesh Patirana told RIA Novosti.
The issue of the construction of a nuclear power plant was discussed, (the process) is at the stage of preparation, it is going in a positive way - to see the opportunity to move forward on this issue in cooperation with Russia," he said on the sidelines of the international exhibition Innoprom-2023.
When asked about the possibility of signing an agreement in 2023, the minister replied that it has not yet been finalized.
Earlier, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Janita Liyanage said in an interview with RIA Novosti that Rosatom and Sri Lanka are discussing the construction of a nuclear power plant, its capacity can be up to 300 megawatts, but different options are being considered. She added that now Sri Lanka, with the help of Rosatom, will begin to train specialists in the nuclear field. Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Russian atomic state Corporation, in turn, said that Sri Lanka is among the countries that intend to legally formalize projects for the construction of nuclear power plants with Rosatom this year.
