OREANDA-NEWS The proposal to ban gold imports from Russia should first be discussed at the EU level, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday, June 27.
"First of all, there is still a need to hold a debate on this topic in the European Union", Tagesspiegel quoted him as saying.
At the same time, he assured that the sanctions against Russia are working and will "weaken" it. Scholz also raised the issue of Russia's participation in the G20 summit. According to him, no one "wants to torpedo" the work of the G20 format.
"One thing is clear: the G20 must continue playing its role", the Chancellor stressed.
He explained that there is still a long time before the next G20 summit, scheduled for November in Indonesia, and the international situation could change dramatically. The chancellor added that the German authorities will take the decision to participate in the summit shortly before the date of its holding.
On June 26, it was reported in London that the leaders of Great Britain, the United States, Japan and Canada intend to announce the decision to ban the import of Russian gold at the G7 summit. Moreover, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is going to call on other countries to join these restrictive measures.
