OREANDA-NEWS. The Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia reported on confirmation of the antiviral activity of the medicine Mefloquine in the treatment of patients infected with coronavirus.

“It has been proven that Mefloquine completely blocked the development of the cytopathic effect of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (causative agent of COVID-19) in cell culture at a concentration of 2 mcg/l. Such a concentration in blood plasma is achieved after taking the drug in therapeutic doses authorized for use in humans,” Veronika Skvortsova, a head of the FMBA, said.

The antiviral activity of the drug was tested by experts of the scientific production center Pharmacological Protection within the FMBA of Russia and the 48th Central Scientific Research Institute of the Ministry of Defense.
